In order to undertake is research activities, QUT is accredited with various regulatory bodies in the areas of Human, Animal and Biosafety Assurance. The Research Ethics Unit undertakes the following to ensure a high standard of compliance is achieved:
- Assess relevant statutory requirements, review and amend QUT's Risk Management strategies and provide advice on the potential impact to the Manager, Office of Research, QUT Compliance Officer and the DVC (R&C);
- Facilitate submissions in relation to any peak body draft policies, and engage with peak bodies in policy development;
- Implement Policy and Process changes to achieve a high level of legislative compliance and ensure these requirements are communicated to the QUT Research & Teaching community;
- Coordinates the reporting of compliance matters across all the research activity areas to ensure compliance obligations are met in a satisfactory timeframe.
Human
The QUT University Human Research Ethics Committee is registered and accredited with the NHMRC to conduct research involving human participation (Registration # EC00171). Accreditation is subject to continued compliance with the National Statement, monitored via the submission of an annual report to the NHMRC Human Research Ethics Committee.

Animal
QUT is registered and accredited with Queensland Department of Primary Industries (QDPI) to use animals for scientific purposes (Registration # 0052). Accreditation is current to 2008 subject to triennial audit by QDPI and the acceptance of the Institute Annual Report.
Compliance with the Code of Practice for the use of animals for scientific purposes is also monitored by submission of an annual report to the NHMRC Animal Welfare Committee.

Biosafety Assurance
QUT is registered and accredited with the Office of Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) to conduct dealings with Genetically Modified Organisms (Accreditation Number ACCR 066/2002; Variation Number VAR 2509/2005). Accreditation is subject to triennial audit by OGTR and the acceptance of the Institute Annual Report.
