Attention: Information regarding the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (Code of Practice)
The NHMRC Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (Code of Practice) is currently under review. It is anticipated that a draft revised Code of Practice will shortly be released for public consultation. More information can be found on the NHMRC website. Scientific work with animals (research and teaching) at QUT must be undertaken in accordance with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, which has been embodied in the Queensland Animal Care and Protection Act 2001. The purpose of the Code is to ensure the humane care of animals used for scientific purposes, including teaching. QUT is accredited to conduct these activities. QUT personnel planning scientific work involving the use of animals must submit an application for the appropriate level of University ethical review, and the proponent must receive notification of approval before it can be commenced. Please refer to the links in the left-hand navigation for information on when approval is required and how to apply for approval. The University Animal Ethics Committee (UAEC) has been established to review and monitor the conduct of scientific work involving the use of animals. Information on the UAEC can be found on the Governance Services website. QUT has established policies in relation to the conduct of research and teaching activities involving animals and these can be found in the MOPP Policy D/6.3 Use of animals for scientific purposes (research and teaching). Researchers who are unclear of their obligations under the National Statement and University policy should consult with the Animal Ethics Resources Section (below) and their supervisor/research team and/or Faculty Research Ethics Advisor. |
