Queensland University of Technology has an excellent track record in collaborative research involving industry partners, government (local, state and federal) and community organisations.

QUT is currently lead site for four Commonwealth and industry funded Cooperative Research Centres (CRC's) and continues to be ranked in the top ten institutions nationally for new collaborative research projects funded under the Australian Research Council's ARC Linkage - Projects Scheme.

In addition, QUT was awarded significant funding from the State Government under the Smart Start Research Facility Fund, as well as funding from US-based Atlantic Philanthropies, to build a new $70 million health research institute that conducts pioneering studies in health and biomedical science. The Institute for Health and Biomedical Innovation draws upon research from a wide range of disciplines and forges strong links with external clients and industry partners.

QUT acknowledges that there are significant benefits to be achieved through direct interaction with external clients and as such employs a variety of different collaborative models to facilitate effective partnerships ranging from sponsored research chairs through to co-location of industry partners on QUT campuses.

Collaborative research at QUT spans a variety of disciplines including but not limited to biomedical innovation, construction management, nanotechnology, interaction design, human vision technologies, education, diagnostics, information security, cyber law and molecular farming.

QUT's success in collaborative research and partnerships with industry is underpinned by our acknowledged strength in applied research, and our ability to translate research outcomes into real-world solutions.

Research collaborations which involve commercialisation of QUT intellectual property, technology transfer or other QUT intellectual property transactions are managed by qutbluebox, the commercialisation company for QUT.

Collaboration @ QUT

At QUT considerable time and effort has been invested in creating a research environment that is conducive to cross-faculty collaboration. A significant financial investment has been made in four Research Institutes in key areas such as health and biomedical innovation, information security, creative industries and sustainable resources. On a smaller scale, QUT also provides funding from the University Research Budget to support a range of Strategic Collaborative Program Grants in areas such as wound healing, active ageing and digital rights management.

In a further effort to encourage and sustain cross-faculty collaboration, QUT recently established a funding distribution model that ensures that Institutional Grants Scheme and Research Training Scheme funding is returned to the Faculties and Institutes where the research endeavor took place. This process provides Faculties and Institutes with access to significant block funding which can be strategically deployed to support research and research training activities.
