Publication weighting: 1 point

The following criteria must be satisfied for a journal article to be accepted for the HERDC. The information below is based on the HERDC Specifications.

The journal article should also meet the General Publication Requirement for inclusion in the HERDC.

Journal articles must

  1. be published or available in 2011 in a scholarly journal. (Please note: Collection of 2012 published works is now open.)
  2. meet the HERDC Definition of Research
  3. be original material
If the journal article is based on a conference paper that has already been submitted to the HERDC in the current or previous years it cannot be submitted again in the form of a journal article unless it contains a substantial amount of new material.
  4. have an ISSN - International Standard Serial Number
  5. be peer-reviewed
  6. at least one of the authors must be affiliated with QUT (see section 9.4 - Author Affiliation)

Journal articles that may meet the criteria include

  • commentaries and communications of original research
  • research notes
  • letters to journals, provided that the letter satisfies the HERDC Definition of Research (as defined at section 1.3.10) and the subsequent definitions for journal articles in this section
  • critical scholarly texts which appear in article form
  • articles reviewing multiple works or an entire field of research
  • invited papers in journals
  • articles in journals which are targeted to both scholars and professionals
  • articles in a stand alone series

Journal articles unlikely to be meet the criteria

  • letters to the editor
  • case studies
  • articles designed to inform practitioners on existing knowledge in a professional field
  • articles in newspapers and popular magazines
  • editorials
  • book reviews
  • brief commentaries and communications of original research
  • reviews of art exhibitions, concerts, theatre productions

How the weighting works

Each journal article is worth 1 point however this is divided equally between the number of authors. If a journal article has 3 authors, all QUT staff or students, then each author gets 0.333 author points and QUT gets 1 point. If a journal article has 4 authors, 2 QUT staff or students and 2 external authors, each author gets 0.25 author points and QUT gets 0.5 points.

The weighting is automatically calculated on the RM Database and appears on all publication reports.
