There are distinct differences in the types of research activity that can be undertaken at QUT. The following table provides simple definitions of the various types of research activity conducted at QUT and the relevant Office to contact for assistance:

Collaborative Research |
- research projects jointly developed by QUT and the external partner
- ownerships of intellectual property arising from the project is negotiated on a case-by-case basis and depends on:
- equity contributions of both parties
- background ip brought to the project by both parties
- research which involves commercialisation of QUT intellectual property, technology transfer or other QUT intellectual property transactions are managed by qutbluebox, the commercialisation company for QUT.

Contract Research |
- request made by industry or government agency for a specified research project to be carried out with identified aims and objectives
- the research project is often undertaken on the basis of a competitive bid for funds from industry or agency
- it is anticipated that the research will result in a deliverable product or report of commercial importance
- ownership of the IP is negotiated between the parties
- research which involves commercialisation of QUT intellectual property, technology transfer or other QUT intellectual property transactions are managed by qutbluebox, the commercialisation company for QUT.

Application Based Research |
- granting agencies advertise a call for applications and applications are normally peer reviewed
- research projects are normally basic or strategic but not normally concerned with commercial outcomes
- IP is normally owned by the University

Consultancy |
- project involves buying the skills and expertise (background IP) of university staff, as well as infrastructure to work on a specified project
- the sponsor would expect to own the IP arising from the paid consultancy and would also expect complete confidentiality on the part of the University.
