Selecting an AOU Code

  1. If you are not a member of an Institute
    If you are not a member of an Institute then the AOU code you use should be your School/Faculty AOU or your Research Centre AOU. View a list of Faculty AOU codes
  2. If you are a member of an Institute and a Faculty
    If you are a member of one or more Institutes and belong to a Faculty then you have the choice of deciding for each research project or publication whether it is research related to:
    • an Institute
    • the Faculty
    and then selecting the AOU code based on that decision.

    For example:

    If you are from the School of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science then your Faculty AOU code is 1190300

    If you belong to the institute IHBI and want your project or publication to be recorded in IHBI you use the Institute code 1241934, where

    • 124= IHBI
    • 19=Science
    • 3=Life Science
    • 4=IHBI Domain 4 Tissues and Cells

    If you belong to the Institute ISR and want your project or publication recorded as an ISR piece of research, you would use code 1281931, where

    • 128=ISR
    • 19=Science
    • 3=Life Science
    • 1=ISR Domain 1- Natural

    So for the publication or research project you are working on, you need to decide if this is an IHBI project (eg health and biomedical related) or ISR related (eg a sustainable resource type of research). If it does not belong to either Institute you should chose the Faculty AOU.

    You can only choose one AOU code per project or publication. View a list of Institute AOU codes and Faculty AOU codes

  3. If you are an Institute Only Staff Member
    If you are not affiliated with any Faculty and are employed only by the Institute (typically this would be a research only position, eg a Post Doc) then you should use one of the following Institute AOU codes:
    • 1240010 - IHBI
    • 1250010 - ISI
    • 1270010 - ICI
    • 1280010 - ISR

FAQs

  1. How can my research be tracked back to my Faculty when I use my Institute AOU code?
    Institute codes are constructed in the following way:

    1
    -
    institute
    -
    faculty
    -
    school
    -
    domain
    eg 1241551:
    1
    24 = IHBI
    15 = Health
    5 = Nursing
    1 = Human Health and Wellbeing

    Each Institute AOU code contains both a Faculty and Institute component. This system therefore allows us to "count" the research by both Faculty and Institute. However, your Institute will only be able to "count" research publications where the Institute code has been used so it is important that any research publication related to an Institute uses an Institute AOU code.

  2. Will my research records get divided up if I sometimes use a Faculty AOU code and other times use an Institute AOU code?
    When we report on individual research performance, we use your staff ID so using different AOU codes will not affect your research record. However your Institute will only be able to “count” research where the Institute code has been used so it is important that any research related to an Institute uses an Institute AOU code.
  3. What if I have used the wrong AOU code for a recent research project?
    Email researchdata@qut.edu.au to let us know the project details (eg title, RM number) and the correct AOU code to be used.
  4. What AOU code should be used for students publications?
    Like staff, students should choose the AOU code that best fits their research publication. So if the work relates only to their Faculty they should use their Faculty AOU code, however if it also relates to an Institute they should use their Institute AOU code.
