[Print-friendly version]

The Office of Research supports and stimulates the development of QUT's research profile. All competitive grant applications by QUT academic staff are administered through this office, and our staff aim to ensure that QUT researchers are well equipped to submit the best proposal possible. As well as maximising funding chances, this process also ensures professional management of successful grants and accurate maintenance of QUT's research performance data. See our mission statement for further details.

As an introduction to the Office of Research we've compiled this brief guide outlining our key activities and services. If you can't locate information you require on the Office of Research website, please contact us for advice and general information.

Funding Opportunities

The Office of Research work with external research-related granting bodies in both the public and private sector. All research grant applications must be lodged through the Office of Research (MOPP D.2.4.5). Please note that external granting agencies deal directly with universities and not individual researchers/applicants.

Major funding bodies include the Australian Research Council, National Health & Medical Research Council and other external competitive funding schemes. In addition, the Office of Research also administers internal grant schemes (when available) as well as a range of incentive schemes funded through the University Research Budget. Periodic emails are sent out to appropriate disciplines alerting researchers of upcoming opportunities. QUT researchers can also access the COS and SPIN databases. For more information on targeting of funding opportunities, email us.

Collaborative Research

QUT has an excellent track record in collaborative research involving industry partners, government (local, state and federal) and community organisations. If you are interested in forming a collaborative research team, or participating as a member of a larger collaborative application for funding, you can contact us and staff from the Office of Research will put you in contact with other researchers interested in collaboration.

Research collaborations which involve commercialisation of QUT intellectual property, technology transfer or other QUT intellectual property transactions are managed by qutbluebox, the commercialisation company for QUT.

Research Data Management

The Research Data Management (RDM) section is responsible for the collection, analysis, monitoring and reporting of research performance information at QUT with specific emphasis on research grants, research publications and research higher degree students. The section is also responsible, in association with the faculties and institutes, for the collection and verification of research publications submitted to the annual Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC). The section also has responsibilities associated with performance monitoring of institutes and research centres, and the allocation of block funding to faculties for research.

Research Ethics

The University has established Research Ethics expectations to ensure that research practices at QUT conform to the appropriate external standards. Areas and issues relevant to research ethics include: human research ethics, animal use in research or teaching, dealings with genetically modified organisms and biosafety. Each faculty has at least one Faculty Research Ethics Advisor who can provide researchers with advice on research ethics matters. The Research Ethics Officer coordinates research ethics administration at University level and enhances Faculty-level procedures for the ethical conduct of research. The University has produced a series of Research Ethics Manuals to provide advice in relation to planning research, applying for ethical clearance, and conducting research in an ethical manner.

Workshops, presentations and seminars

As part of our continuing commitment to assisting the research community, the Office of Research conducts workshops on upcoming funding opportunities and strategies to increase competitiveness.

Research Budgets

Once your research grant has been approved, the budget, invoicing, financial reports and progress reports are looked after by the Research Budgets + Finance Team.
